Starting, Groups and Waves

Starting Groups

Starts based on running time, with restricted access and according to the performance of the athletes in a 10K race in the last two years:

  • Elite B: athletes with a time less than or equal to 37:30 minutes
  • Sub 45: time less than or equal to 45 minutes
  • Sub 50: time less than or equal to 50 minutes
  • Sub 60: time less than or equal to 60 minutes
  • Sub 1h15: time less than or equal to 1h15 minutes
  • +1h15: time greater than 1h15 minutes

How to get access to Starting Blocks?

Access to Elite B, Sub45, Sub50 and Sub60:

  • A time record from a 10K race completed in the last two years is mandatory; send proof to suporte@hmssports.pt, with the race bib number and name of the athlete, until December 7, 2026.

Access to Sub 1h15:

All athletes who register after December 7, 2026 have three days after registering to send running proof of time to change the starting block. If the running proof it's not send within this period, the starting block will not be changed.

Starting Waves

Athletes will not start all at the same time, but by starting waves.

Distribution of starting blocks across the starting waves
1st wave 2nd wave 3rd wave
Elite B / Sub 45 / Sub 50 Sub 60 Sub 1h15 / +1h15

All athletes must be lined up at the start, mandatorily, by 9:30 PM in their respective place, according to their starting block. The doors of the blocks will be closed at 9:30 PM. After that time, access is only through the +1h15 block.

The timing chip will only be activated when the athlete passes through the starting line, as such, the fact of starting in different starting waves does not imply a penalty in the race time.

The final classification will be ordered according to the official time, but we will provide the classification by chip timing.

Green Event

HMS Sports has assumed, throughout its activity, a commitment to continuous evolution and improvement with the implementation of measures to reduce the environmental impact of the sporting events it holds.

It was one of the great novelties of the 11th edition, held in 2018, and continues this year with the ambition to reinforce measures to protect the environment, in a work developed with the Lisbon City Council and partners.

Sporting events have involved the use of plastic materials and packaging in large quantities, which represent a challenge for the pickup and treatment of waste. But that's not all: there are problems with mobility, carbon dioxide emissions and, above all, the education of workers, collaborators and participants.

We have established, in this context, a sustainability plan that will seek to implement intervention measures in four critical environmental areas:

  • 1. logistics and communication
  • 2. mobility and transport
  • 3. reduction and reuse of materials
  • 4. awareness and pedagogy

The responsibility of a sports organizer like HMS Sports is to ensure that the messages targeting this audience, before, during and after the event, result in a positive impact on society.

It is also important to recognize that the organisation of a sporting event has a significant environmental impact and it is possible to improve and reduce the ecological footprint of each event. Thus, HMS Sports intends to be an example of environmental policies to be followed, seeking, at the same time, to be in line with one of the biggest concerns of its public: the environment. We have therefore designed a sustainability plan that provides a set of concrete measures to be applied in sporting events.

In the 19th edition of LIDL São Silvestre de Lisboa, to be held on December 26th, 2026, several measures are foreseen:

  • reduction of plastic bags for t-shirts, bib, pins, starter kits, finisher kits;
  • elimination of paper promotional flyers;
  • reduction of paper consumption;
  • communication with athletes through digital mailings;
  • event information leaflets available in digital format, on the competition website;
  • promotional leaflets of partners replaced by electronic vouchers;
  • reduction of travel with advance planning;
  • incentive to use public transport to travel to the event, through partnerships with Fertagus and CP – Comboios de Portugal;
  • use and reinforcement of differentiated containers from the Lisbon City Council to separate waste and promote recycling at the starting point, target and supply points;
  • reuse of graphic material produced in previous editions.
